In 2009, at the tail end of the recession and housing crisis, I moved to a city I'd never lived in, and a city where I had no contacts. Why? I'd purchased a home, sight unseen, for $1800. That's right, ONE THOUSAND AND EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS for a whole house. Granted it needed work. But the freedom that owning a home free and clear bought me was invaluable. I was able to keep taking risks on real estate in that housing market, and that paid off in a major way for my family.
